Suriname is engaged into a national REDD+ readiness process. The country aims at getting ready to use the international REDD+ mechanism as a tool for sustainable development, combining social and economic prosperity with keeping a high percentage of forest cover and limiting deforestation in Suriname. The National Institute for Environment and Development in Suriname (NIMOS), on behalf of the Government of Suriname, is the National Technical Focal Point and coordinating body of the Suriname REDD+ Project.
Within the REDD+ readiness phase, SBB is an implementation partner responsible to establish the Forest Reference (Emissions) Level (FREL/FRL) and to develop a National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS), following UNFCCC decisions and the the IPCC guidelines.
